Spes Maris

Mixed Media on layered acrylic

DID YOU KNOW ? Due to the rise in water temperatures, some corals during the process of bleaching, change color as a last-ditch effort to survive? Scientists recently discovered that colourful bleaching events occur when corals produce “what is effectively a sunscreen layer” on their surface to protect against harmful rays and create a glowing display that researchers believe encourages algae to return. The dying corals gain more pigment, and glow in shades of neon. This process is a chilling, beautiful and heartbreaking final cry for help as the coral attempts to grab our attention.  My latest series ‘Spes Maris’~ Hope of the sea, is an attempt to bring your attention to this phenomenon occurring in the depths of our oceans. The works created in mixed media on acrylic offer scope for exploration through colour, texture and illusion.
